Introduction

Cathode materials are dark-grey powders containing several metals such as lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese. They are the main component of Li-ion batteries, determining the amount of energy that can be stored in batteries. Cathodes are the most important driver to reach optimal performance, best cost balance and lowest possible CO2 footprint. 

Umicore, being a leader in this field since 1999, not only delivers a variety of cathode materials for electric vehicles but also for power tools, portable electronics and energy storage. Each of these applications have different uses, which require different types of batteries. This is where Umicore’s battery materials technology comes in. With six production sites worldwide we ensure global solutions, local implementation. 

In order to pursue its battery process and product technology leadership, Umicore operates three R&D centers for battery materials in Asia (Cheonan) and Europe (Olen, Kokkola).

 

Requirements for each application

Automotive

To meet the diverse nature of battery requirements from hybrid to full electric vehicles, we have developed a wide portfolio of products: NMC and NCA as the platform of choice for EV, requiring high energy, and NMC as potential platforms for HEV, requiring high power. 

We work with our global automotive customers towards best performing cathode materials using highly efficient production processes based on sustainably sourced, low CO2 raw materials and an increasing fraction of recycled content. 

ESS 

We offer dedicated NMC and NCA materials that we believe to be an excellent trade-off between the different ESS requirements: cycle life, cost, power characteristics.

Power tools

We offer specific NMC cathode materials as the optimal solution for the weight-power trade-off, enabling this technology to satisfy every customer.

 

Technical specifications

We combine our in-depth battery materials know-how with our in-house precursor and cathode materials technology to deliver custom made solutions hitting our high volume customers’ cell design targets. Each project is customer specific.
