North America
Umicore plans to construct a manufacturing facility for cathode active battery materials (CAM) and their precursor materials (pCAM) in Ontario, Canada. Umicore is targeting to start construction in 2023 and operations at the end of 2025 with the potential to reach by the end of the decade an annual production capacity capable of powering approximately one million EVs.
Europe
Our gigafactory in Nysa, Poland, is the first cathode materials plant in Europe. The carbon neutral plant started production in 2022 and makes use of 100% green electricity from a nearby wind farm.
The cobalt refining and cathode precursor activities in Kokkola are part of Umicore since 2019. It is the largest cobalt refinery in Europe.
The ultra-modern global Process Competence Center for process technologies focuses on innovative energy-efficient production processes to apply to its high-technology installations worldwide.
Asia
Umicore Rechargeable Battery Materials Korea has been producing cathode materials for lithium-ion rechargeable batteries since 2000. Its R&D center oversees Umicore’s battery materials product research and houses a new large battery cell laboratory with extensive testing capabilities.
The plant in Jiangmen is in operation since 2006. Today, two factories produce high-performance lithium-ion battery cathode materials and their precursors.
